Bike Lane Along
the Żerań Canal

Time: 1.5–2 hours Distance: 15 km Type: Cycling Start: Żerań (Warsaw) End: Nieporęt Beach / Lake Zegrze
Full route: Żerań canal entrance → 15 km north along the canal → Nieporęt Beach, Lake Zegrze

🚲 Route Overview

The route follows the dedicated bike lane running alongside the Żerań Canal, connecting southern residential areas in Warsaw with the recreational zone near Lake Zegrze. The canal creates a long, linear corridor that naturally guides cyclists northward, away from dense traffic and into greener, more open space.

This is one of Warsaw's most pleasant cycling routes — flat, well-surfaced, and almost entirely car-free. It works well for both casual riders and those looking for a longer recreational ride out of the city.

💧 Żerań Canal — History and landscape

The Żerań Canal is a calm, artificial waterway that links the Vistula River with Lake Zegrze. It was constructed in the early 1950s as part of a post-war hydrotechnical project aimed at improving inland water transport and supplying cooling water to the Żerań Power Plant, one of Warsaw's key industrial facilities at the time.

Its banks are lined with trees, reeds, and patches of unmanaged vegetation, giving the area a semi-natural character despite its urban and industrial origins. The water surface often remains smooth, reflecting the sky and creating a strong sense of openness and continuity along the route.

🛤️ Cyclist and Pedestrian Infrastructure

Running parallel to the canal is a well-defined cycling and pedestrian path. Most sections were developed in the 2010s as part of Warsaw's broader investment in sustainable urban transport and recreational public space. The project was co-financed by the City of Warsaw and European Union structural funds, aimed at expanding non-motorised transport networks and improving access to green corridors within the metropolitan area.

In many sections, cyclists and pedestrians are spatially separated or clearly marked, reducing conflict between different users. The wide pavement, regular lighting, and greenery along the edges encourage both commuting and recreational use. The route is particularly popular among cyclists, runners, and families on weekends.

🏖️ End: Nieporęt Beach — Lake Zegrze

The route ends at Nieporęt Beach, located near the southern edge of Lake Zegrze. This area functions as a major recreational destination, especially during the warmer months. The sandy beach, swimming zone, and surrounding green areas attract cyclists who treat the ride along the canal as a transition from everyday urban movement to leisure and relaxation.

The contrast between the narrow canal corridor and the wide, open lakeshore — with boats, swimmers, and a holiday atmosphere — marks a clear and memorable endpoint to the journey. In summer, there are snack bars and equipment rentals at the beach.
