Józefów – Świder –
Łacha Nowowiejska

Time: 2.5–3 hours Type: Walking / Cycling Start: PKP Józefów End: PKP Michalin
Full route: PKP Józefów → Aleja Drogowców forest path → Świder River → Łacha Nowowiejska → PKP Michalin

🚉 Start: Józefów — riverside resort suburb

Józefów grew rapidly in the early 20th century as a summer-resort area for Varsovians. Many houses were built for short-term stays or seasonal relaxation, and this shapes the urban layout even today: large plots, sandy roads, and plenty of pine forests between the houses.

The town has a relaxed, almost holiday atmosphere even on ordinary weekdays. From the station, walk toward the Vistula riverbank.

🌳 Aleja Drogowców — forest path near the river

The riverside walking and cycling path along Aleja Drogowców provides:

  • Panoramic views of the unregulated Świder river
  • Natural floodplain vegetation and sandy banks
  • Migratory birds in spring — cormorants, herons, kingfishers
  • Almost no traffic — a genuinely peaceful corridor

This part of the river feels surprisingly wild for being so close to the capital. The Świder is one of the few rivers in the Warsaw area that remains largely unregulated, with shifting sandbars, exposed gravel, and natural meanders. Continue to the footbridge area leading toward the wild beach on the Świder River.

🏊 Świder River — wild beach & Świdermajer architecture

Head toward the quiet, wild beach on the Świder River — a perfect spot for a picnic and peaceful relaxation in nature. The Świder is crystal clear and very shallow, making it safe for swimming in summer. It also offers kayaking — you can rent kayaks locally.

Nearby, look out for the famous wooden villas characteristic of the Józefów–Otwock area. These buildings — locally called Świdermajery — are a unique architectural hybrid combining:

  • Russian dacha ornamentation (elaborate fretwork, carved eaves)
  • Swiss chalet elements (steep roofs, extended overhangs)
  • Local Polish carpentry traditions

Many were built as health retreats in the early 20th century, due to the believed therapeutic properties of pine-forest air — the area was considered one of the healthiest spots near Warsaw. The architectural style is unique to this region and is slowly being revitalised; several fine examples have been lovingly restored in recent years.

🌊 Łacha Nowowiejska — former riverbed settlement

Follow the forest path toward Łacha Nowowiejska, a tiny settlement at a former Vistula riverbed. A łacha is a shallow side-arm or ox-bow lake left behind when a river changes course — this one shows what the outskirts of Warsaw looked like decades ago, before development reached this far.

Its sandy, rural atmosphere is extraordinary: a small community lives here surrounded by nature, with forest on all sides and the sound of birds rather than traffic. It illustrates how peri-urban lifestyle functions just outside Warsaw — and how close genuine wilderness is to the capital.

Finish the route at PKP Michalin, a short walk from Łacha Nowowiejska. Trains back to Warsaw Centralna run regularly.
